escape to the garden part II.......

so continuing our tour of the back yard of this fabulous place.......

knot garden.

hardscaping softened with espaliered pear trees.

more custom trellising on the coach house and i believe, maids or guest quarters above.

i think this is some sort of family sundial or calendar? except it is hanging on a wall, so???? i am not sure what it is, but i like it.

orchard under planted with more catmint.

veggie garden.
perfect.

oh, how i LOVE all the CATMINT!!
this really illustrates how using just ONE DRIFT OF COLOR pulls the whole garden together and makes such a huge impact.
this is catMINT ( Walker's Low variety),
which is slightly different from catNIP (also known as feline marijuana).
from what i understand.......
cat's like both, but catNIP garners a more intense response and is not as pretty of a plant as you see used here.

i hope you enjoyed this escape, but lest you feel somewhat inadequate about your own garden now, keep in mind that money is NO object here and i can assure you there is a whole team of gardeners on staff. lots of Erin's working here!
small and understated messy gardens are beautiful too!!

herringbone brick motor court (use an "English" accent when you say that, it sounds much more fancy). see.

i guess i really don't need to point out how gorgeous the house is too?!?! and like you, i wanted to see inside.........so i gave a peek, just to find some of the family watching t.v!
oops......i just smiled at them and walked away. Mr. Dan scolding me all the while......
not the FIRST time I've been caught!
mmmm
mmmmm
and thanks, follower DON, who reminded me that the name of the artist in the previous post is Fernando Botero.
mmm
mmm
and now, back to winter.......eegads.

I don't know what to say my chin is still on the floor! You know I saw your previous post off my phone while i was away and couldn't wait to see it on my big screen. It's one of the best private gardens I've ever seen.
I can see what you mean....it can be intimidating for some....or worse yet some thinking they could have that too with just a little work.
I tell customers too that maybe lavender is not for them and nepeta is more suited for their soil.
thanks for the eye candy!

The lavender-wannabe seems to be drifting in the breeze... such a gentle touch to an otherwise formal setting, a lovely idea

First off I have to say I love this song Sweet Lorraine!!!!
Okay now this place is amazing and it is so funny that you peeked in the window because I would do the same thing! I'm the woman who drives by these homes at night trying to get a peek if the drapes are open and lights are on!
Oh the gardens and home are breath
taking!!

AS IF i didn't feel guilty enough with my neglected postage stamp yard...

I had a monstrous bush of catmint for many years and then when i went to all drips, sans grass, it died off. Guess who is going to be buying it in bulk come spring!

Ya know I luv ya when I'm commenting at 1:00 am : D

Erin dear, you have escorted us to paradise. I used to have catmint in my garden and I think I will plant more, now that I have a full view from my new room through the French doors! My garden is FULL of green and velvety boxwood and this is such a delight to see! HOW ARE YOU? I thank you for that photo of the sled you sent me; I may be using it and of course will link others to this most magnificent place of repose...with all my love, Anita

Thanks Erin for that tour and for the info on the difference between catnip and catmint. I didn't know that but now I understand why my catnip plants never survived the cats laying on them and my catmint plants do survive. I will look for that variety ~ it certainly is pretty.

I saw that (sundialish thing) on a wall in Italy. I think it's a clock/calendar thing? Maybe the season? Anyway, it's groovy and all the lavender catmint is so soft and makes it like a fairyland ... which I love. Hope you are having a wonderful weekend Erin!
